Any time I take pictures indoors, like the bowling alley or the classroom, I get a very yellow tinge to the picture.

I am using an Olympus D550-Z. Can I get a better indoor picture?

You need to set white balance to either tungsten or incandescent to compensate for the incandescent lights. On some cameras the setting is called tungsten and others call it incandescent. They are both the same thing.

To adjust white balance manually, find a white sheet of paper and place it where it is illuminated by the room lights. Zoom in until the paper fills the frame and adjust WB until the paper appears white.

If you're using the camera's flash, you SHOULD use the auto white blance or else it will appear blue.

The girl's white sweater or shirt does not appear with a yellow tinge. Did you use the camera flash?

I did use the flash. I just put everything on auto and start shooting. I haven't had the time to sit down and figure out all the manual settings.

Maybe I just think it looks yellow because when I take pictures in the house or outside the quality of the colour with a digital camera looks so awesome to me. I guess maybe I'm always expecting the camera to give great pictures in all conditions.

I think it is a little yellow. Applying a quick autolevels (in PSP) gives this:



White balance errors are very common - just about all cameras get it wrong on occasions - and are one very good reason for having a copy of Photoshop Elements, Paintshop Pro or similar available, as the correction is usually very easy to do.

The original version of the girl's white sweater doesn't look so white up against the corrected version (its highlights actually have a colour code of R248 G236 B212 (#F8ECD4) - quite a long way off white).

You should not get yellow images when using a flash! Take a picture of a white wall, from about 6 feet away and see what color you get. That would be a good test. It should be WHITE.

I don't know about other cameras but the Minolta S414 flash produces pictures with a yellow tint. Several people have reported this.

I want to see a shot of these guys in ten years hence!
