Hi anyone shoot with an IR filter and have any advice. I have a Canon 20D and plan on trying out an IR filter. I hear that you can leave the WB on auto than mess with while PP and some say you should create a custom WB , not sure where to start on this any advice or help much appreciated.

Infrared will be difficult with your 20D. you will need a sturdy tripod, and long exposures. Your 20D has an IR blocking filter built into it that blocks out most of the infrared light. Not that it can't be done, but like I said a sturdy tripod and long exposures, and most likely you will need a Wratten 87 or maybe 88a.

Hi thanx for the info But I ordered a R72 but received a Tiffen #87 which is no good for the Canon , I found lots of info on this and the 87 works great for the Nikon D70 but not for the Canon 20D, everyone I talk to and seen results for the Canon is with the R72

that is a big plus then, as the R72 is probably the least expensive IR filter. I also have a 20D, but I don't use it for IR, I have an older olympus C-2020z that does not have a IR blocking filter built into it, so I don't have any problem shooting hand held withit, although I still use a tripod most of the time. As far as your WB goes, I would suggest shooting in RAW mode and leaving the WB set on auto. With RAW you can change the white balance later in pp. Having said that, when the time a situation permit I usually set a custom white balance even though I do shoot in RAW. Another thing to keep in mind some of the canon lenses have an anti-IR coating that will create bright central artifacts, the 50mm 1.4, 16-35mm 2.8L and the 28-70mm f.8L are the only one I know of.

I know this is a late reply, but it's a pretty good run down on IR.
