I don't have the Heliopan filter. I use the Cokin P007 IR which is equivalent to Wratten 89B. I have gotten the best results as follows: (there is probably a better way.)
I mount the camera on a sturdy tripod and fram the image. I use manual focus and autoexposure. I shoot one color shot as a reference. I then mount the filter and without changing anything, I shoot the same image. Back on the computer, I have gotten the best results by splitting the IR image into RGB channels. I discard the blue and green channels. The red channel image seems to be closest to pictures I have seen on the web. I usually adjust the contrast and brightness a bit and do an unsharp mask. FYI, splitting to RGB generates three monochrome images, one for each color, with the brightness representing the level of the respective color. I have tried desaturating the IR image or converting to grayscale the the results in both cases were very poor. Cal Rasmussen Hawaii Cruise Links: Pride of America Cruise Ship Hawaii Vacation 2005 |
