Night shots plus persons
Hi ,this is something I have had little to do with, but I'm going away to a place that has lots of illuminations after dark.
My camera has a couple of settings which I have never used "Night Landscape" and "Night portrait" I would prefer to set the camera myself.
So how would you go about getting a photo after dark with a correct flash exposure of persons with the background ambient light recorded as well. I know I will need a tripod but as soon as I put my SB400 on it will select 1/60th and bump my iso up as I have Auto iso on.
I guess I could go manual get the ambient settings then put the flash on with a minus flash compensation.
How would you do it guys?
Thanks for any input.

What you want is Slow Sync mode for flash which will allow any shutter speed. The camera should be on a tripod, use a remote release and experiment with various settings in Manual exposure mode starting with whatever the metering system suggests and bracket on either side. Turn Auto ISO off and start with ISO 200. Also experiment with flash compensation.
