Vertical Question

I have a D90 and just bought a MB-80 Battery Grip.
I used it for sports last night. Lens is a 80-200mm f/2.8 newer version attached to a mono pod.
The lens will allow the camera to go past vertical or horizontal if I don't tighten it at the marks on the lens.

Now my question, is there a way to rotate the camera and have it stop at vertical or horizontal with out having to tighten the nob on the lens?
I ask because at times I should have shot at horizontal, but buy the time I would have loosen the nob, the action was gone.
Or will I have to leave it loose and learn to switch as the action happens and use my framing grid in the viewfinder to get vertical and horizontal correct?

I don't know about your Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8, but the tripod mounting collar on my Tokina 100-300/4.0 has detents for the vertical and horizontal positions, and you can feel them as you rotate the camera & lens. Have you noticed anything like that as you rotate the lens in the collar?

Nothing on my lens. It's smooth the whole rotation.

I leave mine loose and just rotate as needed. You soon get used to looking for keys to the vertical so you can shoot pretty accurately.
