When was a kid we had a super-8 video camera that allowed us to shoot single frames. We were able to make fun animations, like a beanbag chair eating people etc. My question is: do any digital video cameras allow this mode of making videos? I'm getting a camera for my son, and he ought to be able to do this too! Thanks.

I'm not familiar enough with video cameras to know the answer, but there is software available to let you do this with digital still cameras. You can also extract stills from video with many multimedia players, such as Media Player Classic, so I would say your needs are covered even without the in-camera capability.
