Hello, I have been trying to photograph the moon using 70-300 IS USM lens. The problem that I have is when the lens is fully extended to the 300mm and pointed skywards, the lens wants to close back up. Does anyone have any tricks to stop this happening? I have tried shortening one leg on the tripod, but this hasn't stopped it happening altogether. Tall buildings stop me from shooting when the moon is lower.Any help appreciated.

You could try putting a rubber band around the extended portion and sliding it down till it sits against the lens body. That should work as a 'stopper' for it.
