what is Combining Two Exposures on a photo and how is this done in PS?

An old trick to convince the children there really are ghosts:

Shoot one frame of a doorway with flash at one stop underexposed with some nearby background on the other side of the door. Shoot a second frame with flash one stop underexposed with someone standing in the doorway. Merge the two images. The result is a "ghost" standing in the door.
