Default Advice on pictures of baby birds

First and foremost, thank you to any and all who respond to this inquiry. I have been documenting a nest full of robin chicks with my Canon Powershot A540. The nest is about 8 feet up and can only be photographed by climbing up a stepladder and holding the camera slightly above my head. Needless to say, its well out of reach for a tripod.
My question.....what setting would be best for catching the best shots? I have been using the portrait setting with sub-par results. The nest is under a canopy, so it's not the best light. I am attaching a link so that the pictures can be viewed and you can get a good idea of what i'm up against as well as results i'm getting.

Again, thank you.
