How do i autofocus at night? When the lights are too low, the autofocus can't focus and I can't get a picture.

For that reason, I generally use manual focus at night. I realize that the manual focus on a lot of digicams leaves much to be desired, it is better than not getting the picture at all.

A trick you might try is to carry a small but bright flashlite with you. When you are ready to shoot, aim the flashlite at something you want the camera to focus on. Hold your shutter button part way down. If the camera focuses ok, turn off the flashlite and push the button the rest of the way down. One downside of this is that the flashlite could affect the exposure settings and cause the image to be too dark. You need to experiment and see what works.

Maybe you can also move around the flashlite, and get a good exposure as a result.

If this will allow the camera to focus, then he/she should be fine. Since in this situation there isn't enough ambient light to focus, they will need to use the flash in order to get a decent shot. If flash is used, the light output will greatly overweigh the light output of the small flashlight, and the camera should meter itself correctly.

You're not really giving enough information for others to make suggestions without speculating as to what the conditions are.

In other words, the comments so far are assuming that you are trying to take a photo of something relatively close to the camera (where additional light could help it focus)

But, for all I know, you may be trying to take a photo of a distant cityscape, etc (where a different technique may be called for --- for example, using a manual or fixed focus feature ifone is available).

I'd suggest being more specific on what your subject and conditions are (as well as letting us know what camera model you're using).
