I tried to take a pic of the sun setting through the trees and ended up with lines all through the pic. What did I do wrong? Thanks guys!

They look like the high tension power lines.

If there were no power lines, IMHO your sensor was becoming overloaded due to the intensity of the sun, and the lines are the result of it malfuncitioning.

It's too hard to tell, because the picture is out of focus, but they still look like power lines.

I only say that because they look slightly curved as power lines are.

Sorry I can't be of any more help, maybe someone else can do more.

Or, try taking a daylight photo of the same scene and a sunset photo of a completely different scene.

I would tend to agree with Rob about the power lines thing, but I thought that you should get the benefit of the doubt.
