Default Aviation

Hi all, a few aviation recordings with the Pentax K-5 and Sigma dc 50-150mm f2.8 II. The crop counterpart to the fa 70-200 and quite a brilliant focal range for aviation. Somehow the exif identifies this lens as a 70-200 but unfortunately it isn’t. Can’t wait to get about the panning shots with the full frame k-1 and it’s clean output. The 70-200 2.8 is far out of budget but a fast multi purpose lens around the 100mm mark should be a nice alternative.

This photo was the result of an experiment to see how far the dynamic range could be stretched. Stacked several camera raw filters in photoshop for shadows boost only before applying the final adjustments.

Same as above but less punchy

Panning at 1/10s. f2.8 iso2500. Underexposed to protect the highlights. For this distance (190m / 570ft) to the runway centreline it seems about the max shutter to obtain acceptable results. Different parts of the aircraft move at different speeds through the frame and it’s very much a matter of luck to see what part the pan was synchronised to (if the pan was a success at all). Usually I’d prefer to have the front sharp but in this case the back turned out quite nicely. The flashing lights (red on the fuselage, white on the wing tips) tend to help a lot. Getting them both in one shot is even more luck. Colour edit in topaz restyle for this one.

1/10s take off. Panning at the take off or landing reduces the success rate even further as the subject does not only rotate over the top-axis in relation to the camera but also the lateral. Got to love the odd unlikely shot.
Happy Shooting! GB
