Default Smooth Sailing

Hi everyone,

A few results from a recent sailing trip. The used vessel is a traditional Dutch flat bottom design. Virtually keelless, minimal draft and so ideal for operating in shallow waters. the Netherlands being mostly a river delta has plenty of it. Directional stability is derived through the Ďswordsí on the sides which can be lowered. The idea was to intentionally strand the vessel out at sea, let the tide run away to eventually sit dry on the sea floor. Wait for the tide to return and sail away again. A remarkable experience.

Phone, drone and dslr. Iíve found the drone to be the perfect asset during sailing. Depending on the vessel, weather and sea state it can be an intense experience but this was smooth sailing. The phantom series from dji have the ideal landing gear to release and grab from the air. One has to bypass all the fancy safety features for take off and landing or it wonít. Also the gps stabilisation is not your friend during those phases.

It was fun to experiment with empty space in the photos.

iPhone hdr shot with lightroom mobile. Iím impressed with itís performance in dynamic (motion-wise) scene. Some imperfections remain in the water at the bottom. Left it there to show that.

Thanks for the education regarding the Dutch flat bottom vessel. I've only sailed on a vessel with a keel. I've never experienced "swords" in my very limited time on a sailing a vessel. Very interesting.

The drone proves to be a very useful tool, and clearly shows the experience your telling us of.

Thanks for sharing.
