Iwo Jima

I was contacted yesterday by a grand daughter who wanted me to colorize a pic of her grandfather as he stood under a flag planted on the top of Mt. Suribashi on the island if Iwo Jima. After I finished that she asked me to do another from the beach landing. In the first pic are 4 of the original 6 men who raised the flag for the second time in that famous shot that won a pulitzer prize back in 1945.

This is a pic I colored of PFC Harold Shultz who died in 1995. It was only in 2016 that they correctly identified him as one of the 6 flag raisers in the famous shot. Why he never said anything remains a mystery which he took to his grave.

"Why he never said anything remains a mystery which he took to his grave."

Very nice job on all these photos.

Men were different then, men like my father, who stormed beaches with the Marines, as a Navy Corpsman. Never talked about it until 1970, when I came home alive from Vietnam. Only then because I was an infantryman, and wounded twice. If not for that, I may never have known about the South Pacific, other than books written on the subject.

They did their job, not for the glory, but for their country.

You have a real talent, a gift, for bringing these old photos back to life.

My father never talked about the war either. Here in Canada we can send away and get complete war records. I asked him if I could do it. He said yes. When they arrived at his house he called me and I went over to pick them up. He handed me the unopened package and said, after you read this I dont want to hear a single word about it from you. I never did and he died. The end.
