I know this is little off the beaten path. But I need a stable tripod to hold up a 12x16 field painting box. I was hoping that someone on this forum might be able to make some recommendations.

Here are main criteria:

-Sturdy anad can take a bit of wind without blowing my painting over.

-the box is 12x 16 and could weigh up to 11 lbs. with supplies.

-As light-weight as possible given the first two criteria.

-Quick release plate.

-Price is definitely an object. I'm hoping for under a $100.

-Independent moving legs to work on unevven terains would be nice. Spiked feet would also be grand.

-I am only 5"4" so height is not important. but I would like to use it both sitting and standing.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

If you're not using it for a camera, you might consider a surveyor's transit tripod. I saw on another forum where someone was looking at them for photo use and commented on how sturdy they were and easy to adjust. I think he said he was looking at Home Depot, but Lowes or Menards probably have them too.

Yup. I'm thinking that's alot different from a camera. 11 pounds of camera on a 4.5 pound tripod is going to be top heavy. But, sometimes you can get away with it on a good tripod (which would likely cost more than $100). But I'm thinking a 12x16 box on top of it is going to be acting like a sail.

I'm thinking you might not need quite the vibration dampening qualities of a good camera tripod, but you might also need a heavier tripod to stabilize a box like that on top.
