I'm in the market for a good tri-pod. I don't need top of the line, but I do want something sturdy. My problem is I don't even know any brand names or where to begin. Can anyone point me in a direction...brand name, style, what to look for in a decent one...

As always, Thank you for your help!

Some major names:
Manfrotto Look for "Which tripod" at the bottom of the page.

Stay away from the very cheap no-name tripods that are too flimsy.

Store test: Extend the legs on the tripod to maximum. Mount the camera with the longest telephoto lens and look through the viewfinder. There should minimum vibration visible in the viewfinder while playing with the settings on the camera, in particular when shooting.

Raising the center post can introduce shake. Think of a flower on a stalk in the wind.

Ball head is easier to level but cheap ones won't hold the camera without flopping over.

Tilt and pan heads hold the camera without flopping but are harder to level.

Quick release plates allow you to get the camera on and off the tripod and monopod quickly and without fiddling with the screw.

You may also wish to explore a monopod as well. Good for supporting a telephoto lens and easier to carry but not as stable. Makes a great cudgel in a pinch!

The sites shown above will show examples of what I outlined.

I just received a Manfrotto 725B for Christmas. This is a ball head type and I use it for my Nikon D70s. I also have the Manfrotto 681 monopod with a 234 monopod head and Manfrotto Quick Release Plate.

Hello Bob.

Just read that you also own & use a Manfrotto Monopod...yesterday, I obtain at "Tel-Aviv" flea market a one model Pro-479 for a mere $:5.00 (Yes Five US dollars), completely "brand New" in his originally cardboard package & nylon. No head of course. How you catalog this aluminum. Manfrotto item?:?

Second as I own 3 digital cameras with "Stabilizers" question is if i can use them mounted on this Monopod with the "Stabilizer" ON? or must turn OFF?:?

Thanks for your cute advise!:D
