I have a local camera shop in the medium sized city I live in. I know they sell tripods. The company is called Provident Camera and might be a mom and pop type of camera store. Anyway I'm going to check it out during lunch.

I really can't afford to spend more than $30-40 on a tripod. I only spent $270 for my camera so buying a bogen at $100+ is going to be too much for me.

I also am looking for used as well. I can potentially buy a Velbon VE-3 for under $30. From the googling I've done this appears to be an old model with steel legs. Is it any good.

Also I can get a Velbon CX-300 for about $20 (retail is $30). Would this be better than the $20 SLIK?

For anyone that is interested there is a Velbon MAXI 347 on ebay for a buy it now of $65. IT is also a reserve auction but I've tried up to $45 and still the reserve has not been meet. The shipping is $8. The tripod is out of my price range but may be nice for someone here.

MY use of the tripod would be occasonal. Most likely would be using in shooting landscapes and with use of the 370mm equiv. zoom of the fuji S5100. I normally only take pictures at special events and while on vacation. I will not use the tripod all that much. This is why I don't want to spend any more than $30-40. Suggestions?

Well I finnaly bought a tripod by reading some of the suggestions here. I won on ebay a used (but listed as excelent and in working order condition) Bogen 3001 leg set and 3029 head for $50 delievered. Not bad considering this is around $170 new.
