Default Sunpak Compact B versus Slik Mini II?

I'm a full-time budget traveler, and looking to add a sub-$80 tripod to pair with my Nikon D5000.

I've reached a bit of a crossroads in my tripod search, and was hoping to get some feedback on the two choices I've come down to:
  1. I dislike the Sunpak's protruding handle, but the panning head would be better than the Slik's ballhead for creating panoramic images. The center of balance of the Sunpak is better for my type of camera.
  2. I'm unsure about the type of leg locks on the Sunpak, but enjoy the smooth legs that won't get caught on things in a daypack as I withdraw it.
  3. The Slik can get down really, really low -- whereas the Sunpak reaches up an extra 10 inches or so higher.
  4. I get the impression that the Slik is of better quality.
  • Minimum Height: 9.1" (23 cm)
  • Maximum Height: 52.2" (132.5 cm)
  • Weight: 2.2 lbs (983 g)
  • Minimum Height: 5.9" (15.0cm)
  • Maximum Height: 42.9" (109.0cm)
  • Weight: 1.72 lbs (780 g)

I travel allot also, the slik with the ball head will pack down better. And I believe that you can flip the inner tube upside down to put the head into the legs for a more compact fit.

The Sunpak has a pan head, it tend to be easier to set up the camera vs the ball head. It does not look like you can invert the center pole. I like the build of slik products. I have owned them in the past. And have bene happy with them.

Between the 2 the smaller slik would be my choice as a travel companion.
