I need a tripod that is
a) light
b) slim
c) fixed height (once legs are extended)
d) have all legs tied so they open together
e) a way to make the legs open a certain distance only.

I was at Warwick Castle today and flash photography isn't allowed in certain areas. A normal tripod probably wouldn't be allowed either because of tripping up other visitors and there wouldn't be the space to set it up.

A "slim" one that you could just stand in front of you that didn't open too far would have been useful. I don't think a monopod would have been much use for the shutter speeds I would have needed at ISO100.

Please excuse the blatant advertisement, but there is a walking stick/monopod/tripod that is often allowed where tripods are not. Although it does not meet your requirement "d)", you may find it useful. It can be seen at http://www.trek-tech.com/products_hiking/index.php.

Thanks for the link.

It's an interesting looking object.

The spread of the legs is nice and small. I can't see people complaining about it causing a hazard

It's certainly worth consideration.

I bought a trekpod about a month ago and love it. Works great, easy and quick to setup and take down. But you need to realize it is not as stable as a tripod would be, but it is a lot more stable than a mono-pod. If you are in windy conditions I wouldn't leave my camera sitting by its self on the tripod setting. But I really like it.
