I already have a set of Leki Trekking poles and was thinking it would be really nice to be able to turn one of them into a monopod. Was looking to have something like this
http://mountainsmith.com/products.as...bCategory2Id=0 has anybody seen replacement grips that have the camera mount head?

G'day ewan
I'm slightly confused - the link shows that the pole already has a removable cap that reveals a 1/4" SAE thread for camera use ... so it seems already able tobe used as a monopod What I would consider adding is a small ball & socket head to make it more usable while on-the-track Regards, Phil

Phil,
sorry for the confusion. The poles I have have standard ski grip type grips. I'd like to find a replacement grip to make one of the poles I have like the one in the link.

Easy as pie. Go to a hardware store and find some toilet mounting studs of the correct size. These have threads on one end to screw into the wood floor, and machine screw threads on the other, with cap nuts. You may need to drill a starter hole into the top of your ski pole.

VTphotog - thanks for the tip on the DIY route, so the thread on the toilet stud is the same as the camera tripod thread?
I've made a few inquiries to mountainsmith and leki and they do not sell grips alone, apparently the grip is not really meant to be removable. BTW how's the weather up your way? been wanting to make it up Jay way but seems like even they're not getting much snow this year.

The toilet studs come in two sizes - 3/8" or 1/4". For camera mounting, you want the 1/4".
I think this may go down as the Year Without Winter here. We have had very little snow, a thaw in Dec, Jan, and now Feb. My cat has been out catching mice already. Maybe it's just late, and we will get a couple three foot storms in March. brian |
