Hi, im looking into buying a tripod for my camera, mainly for takin stills but hopefully it will rotate smooth enough to use my video camera if i wanted to.

ideally i would like it to very small and lightweight whenits all folded up so its easy to carry about but extent to a resonable high when i need to use it.

does anyone have any suggestions on anything that might be suitable ?

The advice I have seen others give to this question is "You can only have any two of these three things - Light, Stable and Cheap".

If you want to use the tripod for both video and stills, you will want two heads. Decide which you want first and concentrate on that for now.

Thom Hogan (http://www.bythom.com/support.htm) has a good article on buying a tripod. Well worth reading even if you aren't planning on spend as much as he recomends.

ok thanks, the main use will be for still shooting, if i could use it for video that would just be a bonus

You want a pan-tilt head for video as the tilt arm gives you some leverage for moving the camera while still having everything locked tight enough to hold the camera fairly steady. I find these heads are harder to line up and lock down for stills though, and IMO they are not as steady as a ball-head at the same price point, so I'd recommend a ball-head for still photography.
I guess I'd rather use a pan-tilt for stills than a ball-head for video though.
