Default Gitzo Monotrek

Anyone familiar with this monopod. It is designed like a hiking pole and comes with a small ball head under a cover. I was wondering if it functions as a hiking pole as well as poles from Leki and Komperdell and if the little ball head is big enough for a quick release plate. I do a lot of hiking and it would save weight to have a pole that could do double duty as a hiking pole and a monopod. I use a Canon S45 mostly to take snapshots and I like to steady the shots as much as possible, but don't want to carry the weight of a tripod. I know it's horribly expensive like most Gitzo products.

IMO, you can not directely add a quick release plate on that ball head. myself, I adopt this one:

not a ball head, but with a monopod , you don't really need a ball head very often.

Is this the reason of your choice ?
IMO, you can widen your choice of monopod, and order a custom made real “cane head” at “your taste” , and simply screw it in the 3/8 thread . It can be metal or wood handle, may be by some of your friends who have a wood/metal home work shop ?

Default monopod

Comment ca va KCan, je vais bien et vous? Hope I spelled it right it's been a while since high school French. Thanks for your suggestions. I especially like the one about making it myself. The more I think about it that seems like the way to go. I just can't find one I like in the stores. I was in your country several years ago when I visited Waterton Park. Loved it.

Wish that you make a cane head at your taste

PS: take a look to my "lazy man" monopod : you squeeze , it drop at the right height

Hi BigSac again,
Have been thinking about this, may be this can give you some inspiration :
http://www.ltbmotorsport.com/shiftknob.html
It would make a nice “shift stick knob” on top of your monopod
