I use a Manfrotto Neotec monopod with the 3265 action grip (ball head).

Great combination.

Hello Mr. Thai,

It's been a while since I've come across your posts. Hope everything is well.

First time I've seen a "grip-action" ballhead. How does it work? Is it a quick-release for the camera body?

Still, it looks like I'll be going with Gitzo's Traveller series monopod/tripod. Inspite of the price. With either a Kirk or Markins ballhead. Unless I come across another monopod weighing in at less than .7 lbs and 2 lbs for the tripod.

Check out the Giottos P Pod with fluid head. I used one to shoot high school baseball and football games for several years. A purchase that you won't regret. Priced at around $100US the last time I checked fleaBay.

Thanks for the recommendation Lou. But while the P Pod looks like a ood monopod with worthwhile features it's still 1.22 kg or over 2 pounds. Not the lightest monopod. And weight is very important to me (over feature set).

Just found a few more "affordable" carbon monopods weighing in at under 1 pound. They are made by Induro. There are three models I will be considering. From the MC-14 to the 24 to the 25. I think I'll be going with the 25 as it is the most compact and can support up to 11 lbs. More than enough for my use. And it comes in at $119.95 CAD. Over $100 less than the Gitzo Traveler 1540 (supports up to 9 lbs).

I use the Manfrotto 685B automatic monopod and love it. It's not the lightest but ability to adjust the height easily I could adjust it to work as a walking stick and back to any height for birds or bees make it very handy indeed.

How long have you had the 3265 action grip ball head (how many years)? At B&H Photo it's been discontinued and 2 reviews at Adorama say that in one case it wore out after 13 months and in the 2nd, after 3 years. Have you (or anyone else reading this) had a longevity issue with this head?

Also, I don't want to spend that much for the Neotec which supports 33 lbs; I'd like to go with the 679(B) which has a max load capacity of 22 lbs. Would this 3265 head also be compatible with that one? I only have a Canon S3 IS, but am planning to get a slave flash for it, so I want a monopod that would let me get a full digital SLR with a 300mm telephoto lens eventually (once I learn enough with my S3 IS to justify buying that set up), so when I eventually upgrade, the monopod will still handle that too.
