I'm using an old (I've had it for about 40 years) Welt SafeLock tripod system which still meets my needs for still photography, but the head is not smooth enough for video (a light mini DV camcorder).

Since the head does not separate from the center column, I've been thinking of attaching a smoother head on top of the existing head via the 1/4 - 20 mounting screw (using a threaded reducing bushing in the new head).

Anyone have any experience with the Manfrotto 3130 or 700RC2? If so, how do you think they would work with a light consumer camcorder?

Manfrotto head 486RC2 is really smooth. combined with the 190XBpro legs i have one versatile tripod. Heavy though.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Checking the 486RC2 out, it looks to be a good ball head, but for video I'm thinking of a head with a pan arm/handle.

Any other suggestions?
