Hey guys,

I'd like to get a high quality durable and lightweight tripod to hold two things:

1) Nikon D300 with 18-200 lense

and at times:

2) SB-800 Flash

I work in the offroad market, so durability is key, then lightweight being the second most important factor. I don't want to pay more than I need to, but I'm willing to get the best out there if there's substantial advantage for durability.

Thanks,

Chris

if durability is your premium consideration - and I guess, this includes also robustness in terms of getting away with some abuse, shocks etc. -, I would go with an old fashioned aluminium tripod. Carbon fibre is certainly more lightweight and has some advantages in vibration supression, but they can be easily damaged by an impact.

The choice is really limitless. I myself have made very good experiences, especially when it comes to indestructability with the following tripods I have and use:
- Slik Master Pro (very heavy, use it only for video nowadays)
- Manfrotto 055 (my workhorse for many years)
- old Gitzo Studex (even more stable than the MA 055)

For your needs, I guess the somewhat lighter Manfrotto 190 should be sufficient, perhaps combined with one of the action grip heads from Manfrotto. But I have never used these myself, as I don't photograph motorsports or the likes.

I ended up getting a slik travel pro with ball head and like it so far. It seems to be very durable.
