Im lookingfor a CF tripod for my 5dII that will be stable enough to use with a 100-400 lens. BH Photo Video suggested the GT1531 Mountaineer but in reading it says it will support a lens up to 200mm. Does anyone know if it will be sufficient to use with my 5dII and the 100-400 lens?

Appreciate help, waiting to order until I hear some supporting information. THANKS

I would be interested in people's thoughts on this also.

Thank you.

Don't see any reason why not, as the all up weight is going to be about 2.5kg with the max load for the tripod being 8kg so even with a good head you will still be very comfortable.

Thanks for the information. I'm also in the market for a tripod and was wondering if the GT1531 would handle my set-up. It'll be under 2kg, and (until I get a TC) no more than 300mm.

As far as heads go, is there one better than another? I was thinking of a RRS BH-40 head with an L-plate for my camera. Is that over-kill or not enough? The only experience I have with ball heads is a light-weight one I bought for an ultrazoom and it won't hold the weight of my dSLR and a 656g lens. Would this head work better than that one does?

mtngal,

Have you considered the Kirk BH-3 ball head. That seems like a quality head with Acra style quick release and is priced lower than RRS BH-40?
