Default tripod mounts

I have an inexpensive tripod I use with my video camera and was hoping to use with my new xsi. The plate on the tripod doesn't fit my canon. Can these be bought separately or will I have to buy a new tripod just for my dslr? The tripod is a SLIK SDV-20. Thanks

go to adorama and do a search for a plate that will fit your tripod with the proper screw size for your camera. Slik should have a plate for that tripod to fit camera's.

Also if you contact slik with the model of your tripod, they should be able to give you the part number for the correct plate for your application

I'm not sure. There is a small round part that sticks out that prevents the screw from reaching the camera. That part fits in a small hole in the bottom of the video camera but the xsi doesn't have one.

okay, I know you are taking about now. You can just order another plate, they should have one with out the peg or one that the peg push down into the plate. If not, get another plate and cut it off. Contact slik, they should be able to give you the part number.

Unless you want to get a higher end tripod, that is a different story.

I used a video tripod for a while with my dSLR (I could remove the second small pop-up, it just unscrewed on my Velbon). After a few times I figured I'd never bother with a tripod because it was so heavy and the pan/tilt head took so long to get things right, and whenever I put the camera on it's side to take a vertical, it would sag because without the second round part, the plate couldn't hold the camera steady and it drooped. I finally broke down and bought a good one with a ball head (which I prefer, others don't) and an L-bracket for the camera. Now I understand why some say a tripod isn't a big deal. The only thing I regret is not having replaced the video tripod sooner.

You could try cutting off the bump if you can't unscrew it. If you have to replace the plate, you might want to start looking at a new tripod.
