Default mini tripod

Hi,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a mini-tripod that won't tip over when you flip a compact cam. vertically? Alot of them are kinda cheap and can only be used when mounting a camera horizontally.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

The brand is not important. The make is more. choose one in aluminium, strong make, rubber or/and stick pods and a removable ballhead.
Some might not agree with the aluminium since its too light a material and might not be good in windy areas. But its easy to carry. It will always be a compromise.

With these critieries and you own it should be easy to find one.

what is your definition of a mini tripod?
do you want a table top type or just a compact unit?
what is your price range?
and of course what camera do you own?

remember a good tripod is just like any other piece of photo gear if you buy cheap you will generally get cheap. after your first bad set you will look at them differently. also a lot of tripods are sold in 2 parts the legs and the head.

to get an idea about tripod quality try- www.bogephoto.com and check out the bogen/manfrotto and the quite expensive gitzo lines of legs and heads.

it come down to versatility, weight, strength, and of course cost. you gotta balance all those to your needs.

a good ones to start on are

http://www01.bhphotovideo.com/produc...BO3008/REG/391

these are 2 extremes.

just look and play at a shop also

Long time no see...

Good post above!

Your first link is dead (maybe just at this time).

Your second link - the tripod - has a "click-pressure" system to lock the legs. I think it's a much better system, when you have the "screwhandle", which is much easier to use and dont squeeze you fingers from time to time. Just a little note for our friend SIFER.

Just my point of view!

first one is dead on your side of the atlantic. works fine over here. feel free to move over at any time.

i just gave a base line to work from.

in the earlier manfrotto qr leg locks the tab would bite you on occasion. they redesigned the tab and it was available as a free retrofit (DIY in under 15 minutes).

i own a gitzo carbon with screw locks. i myself prefer the manfrotto snappers especially in cold snowy wet areas. much easier with gloves for me. there is that minor cost factor too. when you reach a certain level of quality which i feel manfrotto have exceeded in most cases the i start to look at price. i also feel that manfrotto offers somewhat more versatility.

I was thinking of the tabletop kind. My is a cheap aluminum and I never thought about it until I tried taking a vertical pic. I own a coolpix 3500 BTW.

Thanks guys, for all your help! Anything else I should know feel free to tell me.

Check out the Feb 2003 issue of Outdoor Photgraphy.

Here is a link to the article to get some ideas for compact tripods:
