I have been reading forum messages and researching tripods and heads on the web. This will be my first tripod and I am considering the Manfrotto rapid column tripod model 055cl with the 488rc2 midi ball head. My longest and heavy lens is the Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 zoom which is too heavy for me to stabilize by hand. I will be using the tripod for both indoor and outdoor use. I don't have the budget for the lighter weight carbon fiber models.

Would this combination be sturdy enough for the d70 and 200mm lens? No local camera shops stock quality tripods or heads so I have not been able to mount the camera and lens to check stability and ease of use. I appreciate forum members' comments and advise.

I have the same setup you do, I use a manfrotto 055B tripod with a 808RC4 3 way head, that's more than enough for that setup, if your looking for a ball head than I would suggest nothing smaller than manfrottos 488RC4.
