Default new member with ? on Canon 850 is on/off problem

Hi, All,
Somehow, I'm having trouble getting started with a post, so if I'm doing this incorrectly, please help me out. I've used Steve's for reviews over the years, but never for the forums.
I have a Canon 850 IS that I really like. I'll be doing research for a newer camera by the summer, but rely on this one for daily use. I don't have time to do the research for a new camera at this point.
2 weeks ago, the on/off button began to malfunction. It's hard to get it to work to turn on or off the camera. Battery is fully charged. All other functions work well.
Unless someone has a solution, I may need to get it repaired. I'm trying to decide if it's worth it. Here's the main question I have: is the on/off button part of the motherboard or is it separate? In the former case, the repair would be considerably more expensive, since they would have to replace the motherboard!
I'd appreciate input.
