Default settings for Nikon D50 & HS basketball

Hello! I am new to the forum. I have an older Nikon D50 and I want to be able to use it better. I just received a new Sigma 70-200 lense and would like to take some good high school basketball pictures. Can anyone tell me what settings to use or where to find the answers? ConnieG

Hi Connie. Welcome to Steve's. What type of gym are you shooting in? High School or below? Or NCAA Div 1 or Pro?

Unfortunately, you're really going to struggle with that combination in most high school (or lower level) gyms unless you add an external flash.

At f2.8, you usually still need ISO 3200-6400 to get fast enough shutter speeds. Your camera only has ISO 1600 capability and that is pretty noisy. So, your best bet at this point is going to be using an external flash until you can get a more modern camera body to go with the 2.8 lens.

The alternative is to use something like the 85mm 1.8 lens. But, honestly, if you're going to spend more money and already have a 70-200 2.8 your money would be much better spent upgrading the camera body.

Not sure how to get a question out there since it's my first time writing, so I'm jumping on Connie's question. I got a Nikon D40 like 7 years ago to take baseball/soccer pictures. My son, now 13, plays basketball now and I think it's time to upgrade my camera and get a new lens. Money is an issue, but I want great shots. What kind of Nikon would you recommend and what kind of lens.
