I've read several posts where folks are disappointed with their new camera. Which brings up a point that is seldom touched upon. When you get a new camera what would you suggest that the owner do to check out the build quality of the camera, and that all features are working properly? Maybe some basic steps that could be done in a hour or so.

Just go out and shoot a lot - landscape, macro, flash, low light, .... As many different settings as you can figure out how to use - that will take more than an hour.

Read the formum here (and other places) for the specific camera to see if folks are talking about a problem. If there is a common problem, you will likely be able to find out about it before purchase with that kind of reading.
