While I still like Canon cameras , the recent release of the SD500 has been pretty disappointing. The daytime shots hasn't wowed me, certainly night shots have been more disappointing.

That said, is there a brand out there which is capable of taking great night shots?

Great night shots can be done by any camera with manual exposure modes and a tripod socket. IOW, you should be able to do just fine with a $199 Canon A510.

Adjust accordingly if you need more megapixels.
