Making a lens change on dSLR with the camera in the on position is not advisable, due to the multiple electrical contacts on the Lens and the lens mount.

I mean are there any known severe damages that I should be looking for? The enviroment I changed it in was not dirty or bright.

You can most probably get by with a one time occurance, but it is impossible to say exactly and precisely what the outcome will be. That is why I said only time will tell.
This might be a good time to get some more knowledge. Get a good book and spend a wekend with it. It might prolong the life of your Nikon D-200. MT |

I see, have you any books for reccomendation? Also, have you heard of anyone damaging their camera from changing the lens while it is on the camera?
