The couple of Nikon Coolpix cameras I have used had OK picture quality but very slow shot-to-shot time, especiallywhen usingthe flash. I don't know if this has changed with the 7900.

i've just read that it's also slow with 7900....

and what about SONY DSC N1 ???

If your desire is for a high megapixel camera, you cannot go wrong with the Canon A-620. The Sony N-1 and Olympus SP-350 cameras are 8mp but are not as highly rated as the canon A-620.

You already know I certainly like my A620!

I still think the SD700 is his best bet. I think he wants to get his fiance a camera that is dainty and somewhat flashy, but not a "photographer's camera". "Easy to use, quickly and ultra compact," and "fashion and tiny" are the terms he's using to decribe his ideal camera for his lady.

I think the Sony N-1 might be a good choice for Oliver. My fiance has a Sony Cybershot, and she is quite pleased with the "out of the box" picture - well saturated color, and very sharp images, though to me they appear sometimesto betoo agressively sharpened.

I don't know much about Olympus, though in the past they always had nice optics - my mom had a 2mp D-520 that took fine pictures for its time.
