There is a general rule of thumb that goes like this: For the very best photos, use the highest resolution and the least compression. In terms of everyday shooting, that means that theactual camera settings of 5mp/fine is better than 3mp/fine, because 5mp/fine will give youMORE very small details in your photos.

Keep in mind the sensor size hardly increases for more mega pixels, so the image quality will get progressively worse at higher resolution. Overall, the canon still holds an edge over fuji due to over all picture quality. The somewhat older digic I processor with 3mp CCDin A510was the flagship technology that made canon's name. They were in the best selling canon cameras like theIxus 230 and Sd110.It still look alot better than newer "entry level" digital cameras.
