    Default 450d v a230
    Mate has said he has seen 2 DSLR's he likes and are withing his budget. A 450D for £270 with IS lens or a A230 for £190 with lens. Obviously 2nd hand.

    Which one and why? His budget is fixed at just under £300. Ta

    Everything!! He will probably shoot a lot of holiday stuff, kids and he likes landscapes.

    1. ISO Sensitivity - The Sony can use ISO settings up to 3200, while the 450D is limited to 1600. The measured values for each are close to nominal.
    2. SNR 18% - The Canon is a little better with noise at higher ISO settings.
    3. Dynamic Range (The difference between the brightest and the dimmest objects in a single image) - The Sony has the better dymanic range at ISO 100, but it falls off quickly as ISO increases. The Canon has a relatively consistant dynamic range across it's range of ISO settings, so it would be a better choice for low light and sports/action photography.
    4. Tonal Range - No significant difference between the two.
    5. Color Sensitivity - No significant difference between the two.

    also, apart from the systematic approach by DXO. the sensor from the 450d/XSi has always been well respected for its per-pixel clarity, and within its limited 100-1600 iso range was one of the best performers of that generation.

    Then he should probably buy the one that he likes better. If they're both used, then either one is a gamble. That makes the Sony less of a gamble, but if it doesn't work out, then he's stuck with all the lenses and accessories he bought for it. Then his next dSLR will have to be the same brand so he can continue to use the gear he will already have.

    Price is a bad reason to pick a dSLR.
