Going from using just 3x optical, is it a very big difference from the 6x to 10x optical for an average tourist photographer?

It's not really the "x", it's the "mm" that counts. For example, 33 to 100mm is a 3:1 zoom, but so is 100 to 300mm...yet the performance will be totally different. Check out this link:
