Default advice for camera for low light concert pictures taking

I have used my Panasonic dmc fz18 for many years and love the camera. I recently went to a concert that had low lighting. I used the Intelligent auto setting, as I always have, on my fz18 and every pic above iso 400 was horrible. I'm thinking I might need to upgrade with a newer camera. I need suggestions for a camera that is better for low light pics and also I love that mine had the higher optical zoom. Is there a good camera with both for @ $500.

G'day mate

As you're happy with the Panny 'system' maybe look into the FZ200 [if you can still find one on the shelves]

Its constant f2,8 zoom lens is magic, its very much improved noise-reduction capabilities compared with the older FZs makes it a dream to use

Hope this helps
