Default Advice on new compact please

Have been looking at compacts and have narrowed choice to Canon SX230, or Sony DSC-HX9V.
Aim is a camera 'easy' to use, small to carry but still 'quality' pictures.
Your advice / views would be most welcome
Thanks Graham

SX230. The HX9V is a step down in image quality from the HX5V and I think the HX5V's images were quite poor in terms of fine detail (smeared by overly aggressive NR). The HX5V also struggled to get proper exposure.
Disclaimer: I take photos of life rather than live to take photos and my opinions of cameras are reflected accordingly.
