Default Beginner DSLR for Kenya Safari

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy my first DSLR in preparation for a safari trip to kenya in April. I've pretty much decided on a Canon as I've got a couple of friends who also have Canons which will enable me to borrow lenses. I'm torn between 3 models:

Canon 1100D
Canon 500D
Canon 550D

I'm trying to justify the extra expense of the 550D.

As a beginner should I just stick with the entry level 1100D?
Is the difference between the 500D and 550D worth the extra expense?

The 550D is just as suitable for a beginner as the 1100D (so is the 60D for that matter). The 1100D is simply for tighter budgets.

500D vs 550D comes down to the $$ difference. This price difference varies for different markets. A case could be made for the old 500D if you found a screaming deal on it, and expect to upgrade in a couple of years anyways. If this will be a forever camera, I would try hard for the 550D.

Thanks for all the useful comments, I'm going to go for the 550d.
