can anyone make a recommendation for the fastest auto focus on a 5+ megapixel camera? or if the best image quality has fast-enough auto focus... i am tired of my subjects moving out of their position before the camera can focus on them. i am currently using an older (4 years old?) 3.2 mega pixel sony cybershot. ...i have used someone elses's digital rebel and like the speed, but do not need that much camera, weight, lenses, cost, etc. thanks!

Take a good look at the Kodak V-530 or V-550. Both focus quickly and sell for a very reasonable price, the V-530 is right around $200.00.

Here is an example photo.

About the only thing I don't like about my friend's Kodak V550 is the 0.95 second full autofocus shutter lag in telephoto. It is average at wide angle, but it isn't up to many other current cameras in telephoto. I haven't seen tests on the V530.

Most of the recent Casio cameras have been fairly quick. The Z120 is quick and quite inexpensive for a 7Mp camera. It has an excellent lens. It also has full manual controls if you want to switch to them. The Casio Z750 is also very fast and has a nicer viewfinder, lithium battery and charger/download stand.

The Sony T9 is also very fast and has some great features like stabilization and decent shots at ISO 400. It is a great little camera for available light.

Unfortunately neither the Casios nor T9 have a continuous focus mode, which I find handy for shots of moving subjects like perpetual motion rugrats. The camera continues to focus right to shutter release and you get fewer blurred shots. The Kodak V550 does have a continuous focus mode but you have to select it. Continuous focus combined with using pre-focus works very well.
