I am searching for the best digital SLR cameras for under $1000.00. Your advice and opinions will be greatly appreciated. Two years ago I purchased the Nikon Coolpix 5000 new for around $600.00 and I just cannot stand the shutter-lag. I have four boys and as you know with the shutter-lag a photo with all four smiling is virtually impossible! However, I have been very happy with the quality of the photos. Thank you!

Your basic candidates are going to be the following:

Canon Rebel XT(EOS 350D)

Nikon D50

KonicaMinolta Maxxum/Dynax 5D

Pentax *iST DS

Olympus Evolt E300/E500

Which ever one you end up getting, as any of the review will tell you, is a good camera capable of producing excellent pics, and all will be virtually lag-free when compare to Digital P&S camera. They all have slightly different feature set and design. In the end it comes down to which camera feels right to you and what feature you want to have. As anyone would suggest go hold each of these and see which one is comfortable to use.

FYI I got the KM Maxxum 5D. A long line of used lens available andthe Anti-Shake feature is the biggest draw for me.
