Default Best HD videocamera for the buck?

Hi, this is my first time posting and basically I own a Canon 50D which is a heavyweight for photography but cannot shoot video, and since i've started to dabble in the world of short film I'm basically looking for an HD videocamera which has a good balance between quality and affordability. (My budget is around $700)

Is there anyone who has suggestions or could help me with this? I'd really
appreciate it.

The Panasonic GH1 is a great cam that shoots great video but it's $1000 at Amazon and J&R. There are surely others but that one came to mind right off.
