Thanks for your advices, however (as usually happens...) I ended up doing things a slightly different way!

Bearing in mind I originally said ebay (I live in a rural area with few shops offering electronic goods...) I looked extensively for value for money deals after excluding all the trashy listings from my searches - but I got put off by illiterate listings, shady guarantee promises and the number of (obviously!) stolen cameras being offered (camera only, no instructions, no accessories, lost cables and disks etc...) and eventually think I'd read more than 900 listings in detail (and Googled dozens of model names!) before diving for the Optrex...

I couldn't quite decide. Just when something seemed OK someone else whacked on a bid that took it outta reach. Plus there were too many references to knackered shutters anddust ingresson Sony models. Broken buttons on Fujicams, poor picture scrolling on Olympus cams, busted displays on Canons...

So I ended up buying a brand new Sanyo VPCS6l at half high street prices from a guy with 100% feedback who'se been on ebay a few years. I'll pick up a 512Mb SD card (anything I ought to know about them?!?) in due course...

AA Battery wise is NiMH the way to go?!? :?
