Nikon D3000 with 18-55mm VR Lens
Canon EOS 1000D + 18-55mm Kit Quite like these 2 and i have been to a camera shop to 'feel / check them out' but still unsure if one is a better bet than the other. Want a DSLR for general family use with maybe some more specialised photography sometime in the future. I only have a max of approx £350 to spend and i really want to buy new. Not sure about 2nd hand as worried about problems arising with faulty goods and nowhere to turn when needed! Any advice about the above 2 would be great or if you want to point me towards another of the same price that you think might be better then please do. Wasn't too fussy with the Sony A290 when i went to see it! |

It's a hard choice. Each camera has it's advantages and disadvantages. The canon xs offers a live view feature (i think only in certain modes though) that may or may not interest you. Nikon has, i believe, a 11-point system where as canon uses a 7 in the xs model.
I would recommend googling "canon xs vs nikon d5000" and different variations ( i canon rebel 1000d..), there are tons of comparison articles already out there ![]() As far as the kit lens go, from what Ive read, some ppl love it and some think its a waste of time. Personal opinion: I believe that for the 100 bucks difference it a good starter lense and price is worth it. Wish I could be more help, still new to this! |

The Canon has a small margin over the Nikon in sharpness, color reproduction, and high-ISO noise levels. It also has Live View, which the Nikon lacks. Some find Live View annoying, others find it useful.
Ultimately, if you didn't have any preference after trying them both out, I would say go with the Canon 1000D. |

The 1000D is the XS, the XSi is the 450D which is a better camera then the 1000D.

The D3000 and the 1000D are both capable cameras, and can handle everything you say you want to do. It's that "more specialized" part that can make or break either one. Can you elaborate.

I really like the 450D but just can't afford one, new. I don't feel happy buying one 2nd hand.

I would go with a cmos sensor over the CDD sensor.
