I am trying to decide between the Olympus IR-500 and the Panasonic LZ3? I would like to spend about $250. I will be using the camera to take pictures of my family.

The LZ-3 and LZ-5 still have not been fully released as yet, so the markeyt price is sort of an unknown. If you are in a hurry, why not take a look at the LZ-2. It fits well within your price range.

I was looking at the LZ2, but saw the specs of the LZ3 and thought I could wait the three weeks. It is at amazon for $229ish and ships 3/15. Any opinions on the Olympus?
