Default Canon 320HS vs ????

I'm in the market for a new compact digicam in the 300.00 range.
I'm replacing a Canon IS 800. My first wish on the list is better low light shots. From what I've read, the Canon HS line does this. I'm not married to Canon so, I'd like someone to suggest other cameras that fit the bill.

I'd love to see an explanation of the "larger sensor" concept that I believe that i read is responsible for the better low light results. When i asked about this in some local camera stores they thought that i was talking about megapixels as they related to image quality. I had to explain that i read but did not understand about a larger sensor that lets in more available light. I realize that a 10MP camera will give me better resolution and therefore larger prints than a 5 MP camera but does it also mean that i will get better low light shots? So...am i confusing terminology?
Help please.
