I have read far too many reviews and I think I have narrowed the field from 4 to 2 (have eliminated Sony W1 and Fuji E550). So now I think I am just looking at the Canon s60 and s45. Both comparable in price, image quality, and manual features.

So one question I have is about .RAW image format - how many people actually use it? Will I be able to do almost as much in terms of software processing with the high res .jpeg on the a95?

I am a newbie but I am trying to buy one camera which will last me for a couple of years and allow me to grow into it. Thanks in advance for the feedback.

RAWis nice IF you can work the images through nicer third party software. Canon's RAW converter suppliedin thesoftware bundleis really, really slow and a pain to work with. Unfortunately the nicer converters made by third parties will only work with Canon's digital SLR's.

Given the choice between those two, I would opt for the A95. You don't want to start out in digital with a digicam shooting RAW. The software and time it takes to process one image would drive you crazy.
