I had one of the first Rebels as well as the Canon SD780 and I'm looking for something in between. I am not a professional but I do take photos of weddings and parties, etc for some friends and family. I sometimes take photos for portraits for friends and family as well. I also love to take landscape photos as well as city night scenes. I was considering the new Rebel T1i but not sure I really need a DSLR and would love to not have to spend that much.
I think I would like something a little more portable but yet better than just the point and shoot of the SD760. I am very impressed with the G11. Then I saw the reviews on the SX1 IS and heard it was pretty good but don't like the fact it uses AA batteries. I just find that I only take my rebel (which isn't working right now) out maybe 3-4 times a year and use the SD760 more often. But I can't take the weddings and such with the SD780. I even saw the SD980 IS but not sure that is any better for what I want than the SD760 I have. So with knowing what I'm using it for, in your opinion, which one would you choose? Even though I made the comment of not wanting to spend so much for the G11, I would if that is the best fit for what I'm looking for. Thanks for your help and opinions. Nancy |

you know, any p&s is going to have trouble with portraits and weddings, as you usually want some shallow depth of field and some good high-iso performance. so for these needs, the T1i is vastly superior to any P&S on the market.
that said, of the p&s out there, the G11 would be the best equipped to handle some moonlighting side-work in these situations. the lens is good, the high-iso performance is top notch (for a p&s anyway). and most importantly its fully compatible with all the canon flashguns, so you can pop a 430 ex ii flash on there and do decent. its funny that you mentioned these specific purposes for a p&s as i just read this blog on the G11 and portraits, with examples.. http://www.laurencekimblog.com/ |

Hi there, Hiro-
I surely do agree. The image quality of the G-11 is pretty darned amazing. I just purchased one, and am attempting to get a thread going in the Canon point and shoot folder. Sarah Joyce |
